Save The Maternity Unit at Fairfield Hospital - E-Petition
Date published: 18 August 2011
Following the closure of the maternity unit in Rochdale, The Maternity Unit At Fairfield Hospital, Bury is also due to close.
The closures form part of a major shake up which will see consultant-led maternity care concentrated at eight hospitals.
The re-organisation of maternity care across Greater Manchester named Making It Better (MIB) - was approved in 2007 by the previous Labour government, but was put on hold last year by new health secretary Andrew Lansley.
A midwife-led unit will open in Salford.
Three ‘super centres’ will run from in Oldham, Bolton and at St Mary’s in Manchester.
The Save The Maternity Unit At Fairfield Hospital - E-Petition has been launched by Mrs Sharron Entwistle, it states:
Andrew Lansley halted the closures against the Maternity, Neonatal and Paediatric Units at Fairfield General Hospital, Bury in June 2010 as he agreed that a 9th Unit was needed under the Making it Better Proposals. The decision to close these services was given the go ahead in December 2010. After new figures have been received (sent to AL 01.08.11) we want him to re-look at the decision and keep services at our hospital.

Julie Yates says: “Please take just a minute of your time to add your name, we need 100,000 signatures before the 11th November 2011.
“Future generations need this maternity unit, we dont want to risk life by having to go miles to another hospital. Ask your family and friends to sign it too please!
