New waste collection system under way
Date published: 11 October 2011
Waste collection changes aimed at increasing recycling and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill started last week in Bury.
From now on grey bins for household rubbish will be emptied once every two weeks. Households throughout the borough have been provided with a green bin to help make it easier to recycle more paper and cardboard.
A council spokesman said: “Changes to the routes mean that collection days have changed for many households, as have collection times. If you are unsure what day of the week your bins will be collected, go to www.bury.gov.uk/bincollections where you can download a 3-month calendar: alternatively, phone our contact centre on 0161 253 5353. Bins should always be placed out for emptying by 7am on collection day as collection times can vary.
“Can we remind residents to put out their green bin for collection in the same place as they put their other bins (some people used to put their green bag in a different place), and that their green bins will be emptied once every four weeks.
“We’ve started to deliver kitchen caddies, biodegradable liners and food waste leaflets to residents who have a brown bin, and these deliveries will be completed by the end of the month. In the meantime, food waste can be recycled by placing it loose (not bagged) inside the brown bin.”
The spokesman added: “We’ve also received a large number of requests for new, extra and replacement bins. Please bear with us while we look to deliver these as quickly as possible. Initially, we are giving top priority to residents that don’t currently have recycling bins. Although there is a longer than usual waiting time we can assure residents that all bins will be delivered.”

This is a much needed change. Once the initiative has begun people will start to reeducate themselves on proper ways to dispose garbage.
