Pennine Acute Trust appoints new Medical Director
Date published: 02 September 2011
The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has appointed a new Medical Director following the retirement of Dr Ruth Jameson.
Dr Sally Bradley has stepped up from her previous position as the Trust’s Deputy Medical Director, which she has held since December 2009, to take up her new post as Medical Director.
The Pennine Acute Trust runs North Manchester General and The Royal Oldham Hospitals, Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Rochdale Infirmary and services at Birch Hill. It employs around 10,000 staff.
Dr Bradley has broad experience having worked in various organisations and in different roles in the NHS.
With a career including various posts in both general practice and public health, Sally graduated as a doctor 25 years ago from Manchester University. Since then she has worked at Board level in a number of organisations including Salford and Trafford Health Authority, was medical director of Community Healthcare Bolton, GP principal in Salford and Director of Public Health at NHS Manchester.
Looking forward to addressing challenges including being a safe hospital with low mortality, achieving Foundation Trust status, working with new partners in primary care and local authorities to design and deliver care in a tough financial climate, Dr Bradley feels that clinicians leading change is the key to the Trust’s success.
Commenting on her appointment, Dr Bradley said: “In my time as Deputy Medical Director here I have got to know people in Pennine and across our hospitals and the issues we face, so there should be no delay in getting on with the work needed as Medical Director.
“I am very pleased to be appointed as Medical Director as we have real opportunities to build on the successes we have made across our hospitals in reducing hospital mortality, improving clinical practice and patient safety and improving health care for local people, some of whom suffer from the worst health in the country.
“We are improving the care we offer through implementing a comprehensive clinical change programme, as well as a major quality improvement and change management programme whilst working towards Foundation Trust status. We know we have challenging times ahead and we need to make sure that any changes are clinically led and do not compromise patient safety. Our patients come first; patient safety is and will continue to be the Trust’s top priority as we improve our delivery of healthcare services across Pennine.”
In her spare time, Dr Bradley tries to practice what she preaches. As the Trust lead for health and wellbeing as well, she enjoys walking, outdoor swimming and yacht sailing.
The Trust is the largest employer of Staff Grade and Associate Specialist doctors in the North West. It is also a significant provider of medical training in the region as it is the Lead Employer proving recruitment and employment services to Doctors in Training and their Host Trusts located within the North Western Deanery. North Manchester General Hospital is also an associate teaching hospital.
The Trust recently appointed Dr Tina Kenny as Associate Medical Director to lead medical and dental education across the Pennine Acute Trust.
